by Noelle Knell / August 27, 2013

NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite captured this photo of the "Rim" fire currently burning in and around Yosemite National Park in central California. The image, taken on Aug. 26, 2013, depicts hot spots with red outlines, where MODIS noticed elevated surface temperatures usually associated with fire, according to NASA's Adam Voiland. News reports estimate that approximately 250 square miles have been destroyed since the wildfire started.
