Photo of the Week: Solar Charging Stations in New York City

Solar-powered charging stations for cellphones and other mobile devices are cropping up in public spaces all over New York City.

When Superstorm Sandy hit, thousands without power at home flocked to local eateries in and around New York City for more than just sustenance. The most sought-after resource was an electrical outlet where victims of the storm could charge their cellphones.

In an effort to increase its resilience in times of crisis, the city has partnered with AT&T to set up 25 solar-powered charging stations across New York City's five boroughs. The public seeking to power up their phones, tablets and other mobile devices can use the stations 24 hours a day, whether or not the sun is shining. Installation of all 25 units is expected by the end of the summer.
