Photos of the Week - NASA's 'Swarmies' Could Explore Alien Worlds

by / August 26, 2014

Scientists at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida are now developing miniature rovers, dubbed “swarmies,” that would explore other planets and work together like a swarm of insects.

Equipped with just a few instruments, like a camera, GPS and Wi-Fi antenna, each swarmie would play a role in a group of robots controlled centrally by engineers.

NASA reported that the robots are now in early testing in the parking lots surrounding the Kennedy Space Center -- not searching for anything more than barcoded pieces of paper -- but they could someday be used to explore moons, planets, asteroids or Earth infrastructure like pipelines or drilling machines.
