Beth Niblock didn’t intend on moving to a snow-laden Detroit, but once she got there, she immediately connected with the community. She identified with the can-do attitude of the city and she’s used this hardworking, collective spirit to uplift the community after it endured a tough period of bankruptcy. In the first three years post-bankruptcy, Beth and her team implemented $90 million of IT projects, covering everything from working streetlights and police car cameras to a handful of citizen-centric apps like Improve Detroit, Detroit Transit and mobile-parking apps.

However, even after listing the many accolades of her career, Beth doesn’t forget her foundations of teamwork as she recognizes the many people who have helped her get to where she is today. Whether it was her “all hands on deck” team that implemented a new wave of computers as her first project in Detroit, the mayor of Louisville that hand-picked her for the Louisville CIO position, or the resources like Governing that helped her figure out her first role in the public sector, Beth makes sure that success is a community effort.

Listen to her "In the Arena" interview to hear more about how her collaborative and caring values have led her to become Detroit’s CIO.
