Salina, Kan., Reaches Deal on New Body Cameras

A five-year contract with provider AXON Enterprises will see the city’s police department outfitted with updated cameras, software and ancillary equipment.

(TNS) — The Salina Police Department will continue to use police body cameras, after the Salina City Commission approved a five-year agreement with a technology company Monday afternoon.

The Commission voted unanimously to enter into a five-year agreement with AXON Enterprises, formerly known as Taser International, to purchase upgraded police body cameras, software licensing, digital storage, and ancillary equipment for $231,700. The five-year agreement will begin in July 2019.

AXON Enterprise sells products, including body cameras and tasers, to law enforcement agencies.

The Salina Police Department has used body cameras for several years. Deputy Police Chief Sean Morton said video recordings have proven extremely beneficial in the prosecution of criminal cases and investigation of citizen complaints.

Morton said the department will receive updated body cameras near the end of next year that will record enhanced video and audio, perform better under low-light conditions, and reduce motion blur.
