Who might be cooking your food at one burger chain?

Answer: Flippy

Flipping burgers on a hot grill during the lunch rush can be dangerous business. But Southern California-based Miso Robotics may have solved that problem with Flippy, a robotic kitchen assistant.

The robot “sees” with cameras and thermal sensors and works with any standard grill. Flippy communicates with the restaurant’s front counter to take orders in real time. “The idea is to help restaurants improve food quality and safety without requiring a major kitchen redesign,” said Miso Robotics’ CEO and co-founder David Zeto.

International fast-food chain CaliBurger is currently piloting the robotic cook at its Pasadena, Calif., location, and has said it will begin using Flippy in at least 50 of its restaurants in the next two years.

Flippy uses artificial intelligence to flip and assemble burgers — although it can’t add extras like lettuce or tomatoes — and employs machine learning to figure out how to make new foods and adapt to menu additions. And according to Miso Robotics, Flippy is a good co-worker and “even politely moves out of the way” of other cooks on the line.
