Beginning in May, the city of Dubai will be pilot testing smart license plates that include transmitters, GPS and a digital display. The plates will have a range of features, including the ability to automatically alert first responders if a vehicle crashes (thanks to the transmitters) and tell them where to go (thanks to the GPS).

Other features include the ability to relay data on traffic conditions and accidents to other drivers, and make automatic payments, including registration renewals, traffic fines and parking fees. The plates can also display and transmit alerts if they or the cars they are attached to are stolen. Additionally, the GPS feature allows authorities to track the plates, which has caused some concern among privacy advocates, but would be very helpful if a vehicle was stolen or trying to evade police.
