Amazon has been trying to make drone deliveries a thing for almost 10 years now, but the process has been anything but smooth sailing for the e-commerce giant. Government health and safety regulations have been one of the most significant barriers, with provisions against things like flying beyond visual line of sight and flying over other people making large-scale drone delivery almost impossible.

However, things have begun to change in recent years as both the technology and attitudes toward it have improved. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has given approval to a few companies to operate drone airlines, and Amazon’s drone delivery arm, Prime Air, just became one of those companies.

“This certification is an important step forward for Prime Air and indicates the FAA’s confidence in Amazon’s operating and safety procedures for an autonomous drone delivery service that will one day deliver packages to our customers around the world,” Prime Air Vice President David Carbon told Bloomberg. Amazon stated it will begin test deliveries but did not provide further details.
