Can Ford’s new all-electric pickup power a tailgate party?

Remember tailgate parties? It’s been a while since it’s been safe to have one, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Ford wants you to know that that won’t last forever. And it has a brand-new truck to provide all the power you need for your next rager.

Unveiled last week, the F-150 Lightning is the automaker’s first all-electric pickup truck, and there are quite a few fun features thrown in. The Lightning can supply up to 9.6 kilowatts of power from outlets in the cab, bed and frunk (the trunk in the front where a traditional gas-powered engine would go). According to the company, that’s enough power for a projector, PA system, portable hot tub, lights, portable AC, refrigerator and two blenders.

Alternatively, that power could also be used for something less fun like powering tools on job sites. And when you’re at home, you can even tap into that power as a backup generator for your house. The Charge Station Pro home charger, which comes standard with the long-range version of the Lightning, has a feature called Ford Intelligent Backup Power. In the event of a power outage, this feature allows the charger to work in reverse, taking power from the truck and putting it into the house. On a full charge, the truck could power a home for up to three days.
