Just last month, satellites were used to determine that Siberia was experiencing some scary-high surface temperatures. Now, they’re being used to keep track of a scary number of wildfires raging across the Russian region.

NASA on Wednesday published recent images of the wildfires in the area taken by its satellites, and they show multiple large plumes of smoke throughout the region. The area near the city of Yakutsk was completely blanketed in a closeup from the Suomi NPP satellite. The Aqua satellite captured a wider view showing a series of distinct smoke plumes, and a zoomed image from the Landsat 8 satellite reveals a large plume of smoke with a dark burn scar underneath it in the Sakha Republic.
