Despite claims this past July that Windows 11 would be getting 3D emojis — turns out those are only for supported apps like Microsoft Office and Teams, not throughout the operating system — it will bring refreshed versions of nearly 2,000 two-dimensional icons.

The revamped batch of emojis will stick to Microsoft’s Fluent Design language, emphasizing depth, bold colors and transparent backgrounds. The aim, according to a post this summer on Medium, is to reflect human emotions and to be playful and expressive, particularly as more people move into a hybrid or full-time remote work environment.

While some users are disappointed by the lack of 3D emojis in the full Windows 11 OS, one of the summer’s most-arguably exciting announcements from Microsoft announcements remains: Clippy is back, baby.
