New owner and CEO Elon Musk is reportedly hoping to get half of Twitter’s revenue from paid subscriptions. But if recent numbers are any indication, he may want to rethink that.

The Information recently obtained documents showing subscriber numbers for Twitter Blue, the platform's paid subscription service. And they don’t look good. Only 0.2 percent of Twitter’s active monthly users had U.S.-based Twitter Blue accounts, at 180,000. Sixty-two percent of all Twitter’s paid users reside in the U.S., meaning it has roughly 290,000 Twitter Blue subscribers worldwide.

Twitter is reportedly exploring solutions to this lack of paying customers, including an ad-free membership tier at a higher price (Twitter Blue currently costs $8 a month). It is also planning to charge $1,000 a month for businesses’ gold badges, plus $50 for each affiliated account.
