Is this lawyer a cat?

Answer: No, but a Zoom filter made it seem like he might be.

Lawyer or cat? You be the judge.

The past year has seen every video-chat accident anyone could have predicted, but an attorney identified on screen as Rod Ponton went viral Tuesday for his “kitten Zoom filter mishap” during a virtual legal proceeding in Texas. Ponton appeared on the call in the 349th Judicial Court District not as a mild-mannered lawyer, but as a kitten, as he and his assistant scrambled to turn off the novelty filter.

Judge Roy Ferguson, who presided over the hearing, said later on Twitter that “everyone involved handled it with dignity, and the filtered lawyer showed incredible grace. True professionalism all around!”

Ferguson also issued a relevant word of caution to Zoom users Wednesday:

IMPORTANT ZOOM TIP: If a child used your computer, before you join a virtual hearing check the Zoom Video Options to be sure filters are off. This kitten just made a formal announcement on a case in the 394th (sound on). #lawtwitter #OhNo @zoom_ushttps://t.co/I0zaj0wu6K — Judge Roy Ferguson (@JudgeFergusonTX) February 9, 2021
