Range anxiety is one of the significant barriers limiting electric vehicle adoption, with potential buyers steering clear of EVs because they worry they may not be able to make it home before their battery dies. That could, however, become a thing of the past, at least in China.

CATL, a Chinese battery maker and one of the largest EV battery suppliers, recently unveiled a new battery that gets a whopping 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) of range per charge. By comparison, the longest-range EV currently available in the U.S., the Lucid Air, has a range of 520 miles. The Tesla Model S, one of the most popular EV models out there, gets 405 miles.

CATL also claims that its new battery, the Qilin, can charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 10 minutes thanks to its enhanced cooling technology. It will be a while, though, before anyone gets to find out if the Qilin lives up to the hype. CATL says production starts in 2023, and only two car makers, both Chinese, have committed to using it in future cars: Hozon and Li Auto.
