Why is California asking EV drivers to limit charging this weekend?

Answer: Because of a massive heat dome.

Guys, it’s bad in California right now.

On Wednesday, the Golden State issued a Flex Alert asking residents to cut back on their electricity usage over the Labor Day weekend. The western U.S. is looking at a massive heat dome over the next few days, with temperatures expected to climb to the highest they have been all summer in many locations. That will seriously tax the electric grid as everyone does their best to stay cool.

Among other things like air conditioners and other major appliances, the state is asking residents to limit their EV charging as much as possible. Specifically, they’re asking drivers to “avoid charging electric vehicles while the Flex Alert is in effect” between 4 and 9 p.m., which is when the grid sees the most demand. The Flex Alert also applies for running air conditioners and other major appliances.
