Massachusetts Town Gets Awarded New Cybersecurity Grant

The state Executive Office of Technology and Security awarded the town the grant, which will now enable town employees to receive cybersecurity training, assessment and simulation tools as part of security preparations.

(TNS) — Weymouth, Mass., employees will receive cybersecurity training, assessment and simulation tools as part of a grant awarded by the state.

The state Executive Office of Technology and Security awarded the town the grant, which is meant to improve municipal cybersecurity across the state.

In total, 94 communities received the grant, resulting in training of more than 42,000 public employees who will learn what to look for when it comes to cybersecurity.

Employees will use a program called ProofPoint, which will send simulations of cyber threats, such as phishing emails, to them. Employees will learn how to identify these threats, what to look for in scams and how to report or address issues.

The town has invested in the building up of security of its hardware and networks, but communities are being breached through other channels, which often involve errors made by employees. The training will teach town staff how to look out for scams, therefore better protecting the town.
