Company spokeswoman Nathalie Burgos in an email Thursday said that the FBI recently notified the company that some customers’ email addresses, including account passwords, may have been compromised.
Nationally, the cable giant has 16 million business and residential customers.
The information was likely stolen through malware downloaded through phishing attacks or indirectly through data breaches of other companies that stored Time Warner customer information, Burgos said.
“We haven’t yet determined how the information was obtained, but there are no indications that our systems were breached,” Burgos said.
The company is alerting its residential customers through email to take precautions and update their passwords, she added.
The Winslow and Waterville police departments warned customers about the security breach in Facebook posts Wednesday morning.
