UK Land Registry Updates Security of Property Data

More real estate attorneys will have the confidence to abandon the labor-intensive postal system in favor of the online service when conducting searches for property information

The U.K. Land Registry is using the Entrust GetAccess server to provide security and authorization within its online 'Land Registry Direct' service, which provides customers with online access to more than 19 million registers of title and property information. The Entrust solution helps Land Registry and its customers to have confidence that land ownership records and personal details are protected from unauthorized online users and hackers.

By enhancing the existing security features of Land Registry Direct through the deployment of the security solution, it is expected that more real estate attorneys will have the confidence to abandon the labor-intensive postal system in favor of the online service when applying for Land Registry services. Users benefit from instant, reliable and secure access to land registers, title plans, and the ability to conduct real-time official searches. With the move to online services, Land Registry also expects to realize significant cost savings by reducing the amount of resources spent on processing postal requests and telephone enquiries.

Part of the Entrust Secure Identity Management Solution, the Entrust GetAccess server delivers high performance, scaleable web access control capabilities for centrally managing access to multiple applications through a single portal, providing users with a single sign-on to access the applications and content they are authorised to view. Integral to the security of the portal, each user is allocated a unique digital identity that is used when they connect to Land Registry Direct, enabling not only the protection of user information from Internet fraudsters and hackers, but also allowing Land Registry to identify each individual making an online transaction, which is critical for online billing and audit trail purposes.

"For Land Registry to generate operational efficiency gains, it was vital for us to drive more applications through the Land Registry Direct web portal," said Brian Barrett, e-Services Business Manager for Land Registry. "With the rise in online fraud, internet security concerns could count as a factor in deterring customers from using online services. We required an identity and access management system to provide assurance to customers that their personal records and details remain private and secure from the prying eyes of unauthorised users. Entrust presented us with a solution that is robust and highly scalable. These capabilities will allow us to support a growing number of online users as demand for Land Registry Direct increases."
