California Offers IT Workforce Succession Planning Guide

Most of the methods and techniques in the guide have been developed, tested and utilized within the California Department of Technology and its Office of Professional Development.

The California Department of Technology’s Office of Professional Development has posted online a guide and toolset for implementing a workforce and succession planning program.

The 42-page guide covers program development, tips and case studies, tools and templates, recruitment and hiring, and employee retention and growth. Most of the methods and techniques in the guide have been developed, tested and utilized within the Office of Professional Development’s workforce planning unit.

“We are happy to share our successes (and challenges) associated with these endeavors,” wrote CalTech deputy director Christie Borchin, who leads the office, in the guide’s preface.

The guide says that the Department of Technology has learned over the years that a one-size-fits-all approach isn’t effective. “What may work for one particular division may not work for another based on their internal culture, politics, and services provided,” the guide says.

Questions about the planning guide can be sent to Jennifer Hamman at (916) 431-3609 or at Jennifer.hamman@state.ca.gov.
