Ohio is expanding its private cloud in part through a big focus on moving agencies out of their data centers and into the state’s computing center. At the NASCIO mid-year conference in Alexandria, Va., CIO Stu Davis said that within the last 18 months Ohio’s private cloud has grown from hosting 800 environments to 4,700, with the goal of reaching 5,000 by the end of fiscal 2015. Using a co-managed model, state staff and IBM employees currently work side by side in Ohio’s private cloud. The goal, however, is to eventually have the company run the cloud, as state staff members move out of infrastructure positions through job reclassifications, retirement and attrition.
