The private sector has used data and analytics with great success for a number of years to engage its customers and improve its bottom line. However, state and local governments have only recently started to see public-sector results match the early hype.

New research from the Center for Digital Government unveiled in the latest Public CIO special report: Big Data and Analytics, clearly indicates that state and local governments are significantly and measurably improving critical services like health care, public safety and transportation through the use of data and analytics. They are also using it to improve their finances. For example, big data and analytics increased revenue collection by $1 billion in California, cut tax fraud by $30 million in Georgia and identified $5 million in unpaid property tax in Miami-Dade County.
