Vieyra was originally appointed to the position in February 2014, after serving in a variety of information technology capacities at the University of South Carolina.
While at the university, Vieyra worked his way up from a network manager position to lead the information security division as both director and CISO, according to his LinkedIn profile.
It remains unclear just why the veteran information security professional resigned, but state spokesperson Kelly Coakley confirmed to Government Technology that Vieyra was not asked to resign, and that his decision was made "voluntarily."
Vieyra's deputy CISO, Rick Makla, has been tapped to serve as the state’s information security lead, according to Coakley.
