Givens, R-Greensburg, said Thursday the bill was perceived as a threat to foreign languages, and that wasn't his intent.
Givens told the Senate Education Committee that after hearing from a computer programming instructor, he rewrote Senate Bill 16, which now provides support for computer programming including better-certified, higher-quality teachers. The panel approved that bill unanimously, and it will go to the full Senate.
Givens said he wants to give the Kentucky Department of Education a charge to count computer programming as a core science credit. It currently counts as a core math credit and an elective science credit, he said.
