Cook County, Ill., Websites Redesigned for Interactivity

Site aims to be gateway for county information and other county websites, according to County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.

Looking to expand its online presence, Cook County, Ill., has overhauled two of its websites, with an emphasis on expanded multimedia and audience interactivity.

Cook County’s home page features a rotating news story and image marquee, designed to keep citizens updated with the latest happenings in the county. The site also has a built-in Google search engine, YouTube video and other multimedia items.

“The goal was to create and grow the site into a true gateway for county information and the rest of the county’s websites,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle in a statement. “We’re laying a good groundwork to be able to better disseminate information and incorporate new technologies to improve the way we serve the public.”

The Cook County Forest Preserve District unveiled a new website. Some of the features on the site include an interactive map, calendar and a more user-friendly navigation.

Social Media Presence

Popular social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter will also be a point of emphasis for both the county and its Forest Preserve District. The use of social media is something the county hopes will be a two-way street with online visitors, according to Cook County Chief Information Officer Greg Wass.

“We use social media of course to provide information and news to the public, but we’re also going to be using it as a listening tool that can alert us to challenges or opportunities for improvement,” Wass said. “It’s another way to tap into innovative ideas.”
