Does Google Maps know all of the places you went in 2019?

Answer: Yes, and it wants to show you, just in case you didn’t already know where you’ve been.

If you recently received an email from Google showing you all of the places you went last year, don’t worry, you haven’t been hacked. That doesn’t make this news any less concerning though: Google Maps has been compiling individual timelines of every place we went this year.

The feature, called “2019 Timeline Update,” is an expanded version of Google Maps’ monthly recap, which uses Location History Tracking to remember all the places you went each month. This is the same data that the platform uses to create daily tips for your usual commute based on real-time traffic updates.

The new yearly timeline also includes some interesting facts like how many miles you traveled by foot versus in a vehicle. It reportedly breaks down your location history by country, city and specific locations and displays that data on a personalized map. If you would rather not know this data, or Google either for that matter, the email also includes a link to the appropriate settings menu where you can adjust your location tracking.
