The U.S. is the last major market where authenticating a credit card in person requires signing one’s name. That will change in October 2015, when shoppers will instead swipe cards embedded with a microchip and enter a PIN. Some credit the old-fashioned signature system as one of the reasons that more than half of the world’s credit card fraud happens in the U.S.
