The Jiankou section is among the Great Wall of China’s steepest, most scenic and most in need of repairs. Thousands of years of exposure to the elements has caused erosion damage, but the steep topography on which this section sits makes it very difficult to identify the areas in need of repair.

Enter technology: The China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation has partnered with Intel to use drones to perform these difficult inspections. Intel Falcon 8+ drones will be used to quickly and safely assess the Jiankou section with high-definition, 3-D images.

“This partnership showcases how Intel’s technology breakthroughs can benefit with the restoration of the Great Wall of China,” said Alyson Griffin, leader of global brand marketing at Intel, in a statement. “It’s a powerful example of how Intel’s artificial intelligence and drone technology can positively impact the world.”
