As those who suffer from the effects of high blood pressure know all too well, accurately keeping track of how much salt you eat can be difficult. That’s why researchers at Georgia Tech (Georgia Institute of Technology) developed an in-mouth sensor to do it for you.

In its current form, the stretchable device would be attached to a dental retainer worn on the roof of the mouth. The data gathered by the sensor is sent to a corresponding app on the wearer’s smartphone. Going forward, the researchers hope to be able to minimize the device to the point that it could one day be simply laminated onto a tooth.

“The intraoral electronics can measure the amount of sodium from food intake on a daily basis, which is used to control someone’s eating behavior directly related to diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity,” Dr. Woonhong Yeo, a researcher at the lab, told Digital Trends.
