The scooters only unlock between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., for $1, and cost 15 cents per minute to ride. Low-income residents will be able to take unlimited rides for up to 30 minutes through the new Community Pass program, which costs $5 per year.
Built by Xiaomi, the scooters can go 15 miles on a charge and have a top speed of 15 mph. When looking for nearby scooters on the Lyft app, riders will be given an idea of how far each scooter will be able to go before its battery runs out, so they can be sure to get one that will reach their destination. A team of full-time Lyft employees will collect and recharge the scooters at night.
