Alois Alzheimer. Alzheimer was the first to identify the disease now bearing his name after studying a patient, Auguste Deter, at a Frankfurt mental asylum. Deter died in April, 1906 and Alzheimer, together with two Italian doctors, identified the disease after closely studying Deter's brain. Alzheimer died of heart failure at age 51.
