Open Document Format Mandated by Belgian Government

Will eliminate proprietary formats

The BBC today reported that ODF or "Open Document Format" will be mandatory for Belgian federal government departments beginning in Sept. 2008. According to the report -- the source of which was the De Standaard Web site -- the move will eliminate proprietary formats, such as Microsoft Office, although Microsoft was reported to be considering an open standard that would be compatible with ODF.
