How can university students stay safe during emergencies?

Answer: social media

A new study conducted by the University at Buffalo School of Management found that the widespread popularity of social media and mobile apps provides an effective vehicle for providing students with information that can keep them safe.

Researchers found that students were more likely to comply with emergency notifications delivered via a social network in which they participate.

"Social media also allows two-way communication,” lead author Wencui Han said. “Campus officials can respond to concerns and provide more detailed instructions, and users can add and share content, helping information spread more rapidly."
