What object can be found at the intersection of wearable technology, potassium and fitness?

Answer: the banana

The Japanese are leading the way in wearable banana technology.

Dole Japan has been a sponsor of the Tokyo Marathon since 2008, providing runners with sustenance to get them to the finish line. This year, Dole did something a little different.

Two runners at the 2015 Tokyo Marathon, held Feb. 22, received a GPS-enabled banana equipped with an LED display, marking the creation of what Dole is calling the world’s first edible wearable. The curvy yellow "device" also let runners monitor their race times and heart rates, and receive a message that says “eat me.”

The computer components are sewn into the device, and the original fruit was replaced by a smaller one to make room for the technology.

As a histrionic voice explains in the Dole promotional video below, “This is no regular banana.”
