Which nation’s police force is outfitting police vehicles with 360-degree facial recognition systems?

Answer: China

A new police SUV in China is now being equipped with a 360-degree camera connected to a facial recognition system that will help law enforcement spot wanted criminals. Every face within 60 meters of the vehicle will be scanned and compared against databases that use metrics like gender, age, race and facial characteristics. The driver is notified of a database match when one occurs, even while driving at speeds of up to 75 mph.

“As long as you get at least three-quarters of the face, you can make an ID,” Yin Guangqiang, director of the Police Equipment Joint Research Lab, told the Sichuan Daily, a state-run newspaper.

Developed by the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China’s Police Equipment Joint Research Lab in Chengdu, China, researchers hope the system will help police keep its 1.35 billion citizens safe. The vehicle is scheduled for road testing later this year.
