Researchers from Maastricht University, Netherlands synthesized beef in a lab that they say looks and hopefully tastes like real meat. The burger, having an estimated production cost of $325,000, was constructed from 20,000 strips of synthetic muscle that were generated from stem cells. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) announced support for the project, even offering a $1 million reward to the first person or group to synthesize chicken meat, the New York Times reported.
