While Apple produces just a handful of devices that are periodically refreshed in the catalog with a new model, Android’s licensing model has led to the creation of almost 19,000 different device models as of August 2014, according to OpenSignal. Of 682,000 devices surveyed, 43 percent were made by Samsung.
“Fragmentation is both a strength and weakness of the Android ecosystem, a headache for developers that also provides the basis for Android’s global reach,” OpenSignal reported. “Android is now the dominant mobile operating system and this is because of fragmentation.”
