After 15 years, which piece of software is being discontinued?

Answer: MSN Messenger

Launched in 1999, MSN Messenger was switched off for most users in 2013 when Microsoft purchased Skype. Now called Windows Live Messenger, Microsoft will discontinue the software in China, the software’s last bastion of usage, by Oct. 31, marking the end of an era.

At introduction in 1999, MSN Messenger competed with rivals ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). BBC’s Dave Lee memorialized the software in an obituary, noting that the software “is survived by Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Snapchat, Skype, Google+ and Instagram,” and that it "touched the lives of millions of teenagers who, in an age before real social networking, were just getting accustomed to what it was like to live on the Internet."
