Which American counties are the most difficult to live in?

Answer: those in the Appalachian Mountains and the South

According to data analysis by The New York Times, the 10 most difficult counties to live in are in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky:

  • Breathitt
  • Clay
  • Jackson
  • Lee
  • Leslie
  • Magoffin
and four others in the South:

  • Humphreys County, Miss.
  • East Carroll Parish, La.
  • Jefferson County, Ga.
  • Lee County, Ark.
Counties were ranked on an average score based on six data points, which included education (percentage of residents with at least a bachelor’s degree), median household income, unemployment rate, disability rate, life expectancy and obesity. A New York Times article explains the rankings in greater detail, and contains an interactive map that allows users to comb the nation's counties.
