Which federal agency is planning to build the world’s most powerful digital camera?

Answer: the Department of Energy

The 6,600-pound camera planned for construction by the Department of Energy will have more 32,000 megapixels and be used to capture imagery of the cosmos. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope camera (LSST) will be built by the department at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, and begin capturing images in 2022 from the Cerro Pachon mountain in Chile.

"The telescope is a key part of the long-term strategy to study dark energy and other scientific topics in the United States and elsewhere," said David MacFarlane, SLAC's director of particle physics and astrophysics, Wired UK reported.
