San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced yesterday that the city has been awarded a $1 million grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to fund a new and innovative Food Stamp Program Access and Participation Initiative.

San Francisco's Human Services Agency (HSA), in collaboration with several community partners, will implement the initiative which will include webcams and computer kiosks to be installed at community-based organizations throughout the city. San Franciscans will be able to enroll in the food stamp program and recertify their existing services at these sites. This technological advancement, as well as subsequent improvements in customer service, and strengthened new and existing community partnerships, barriers to access will be greatly eliminated and participation increased, said Newsome in a release.

The program will consist of an integrated and complementary system of telephone, Web-based, and enrollment assistance services, and remote food stamp program sites that will provide easier access and simplify and streamline the enrollment and recertification processes.
