Liana Bailey-Crimmins has been tapped by Gov. Gavin Newsom to lead the California Department of Technology as its director and CIO. Bailey-Crimmins most recently served as the state's chief technology officer.
Starting next week, Cyd Harrell will succeed Carrie Bishop, who held the chief digital services role since 2017 and was the first person to do so. Harrell brings a deep background in the public and nonprofit sectors.
Batalla, who brings more than 20 years’ experience in the public and private sectors, will serve as the new CIO for the city of Oakland. He will oversee a nearly $40 million IT budget and a staff of 85.
The unexpected appointment comes just weeks after Amy Tong left the dual role of state CIO and director of the California Department of Technology, which she had held for five years. The position requires Senate confirmation.
