(TNS) LIVE OAK, Calif. Santa Cruz County Sheriff Jim Hart will visit the White House this week to talk to the president’s staff about a national police initiative that’s being implemented in the county called 21st Century Policing.

Twenty-first Century Policing focuses on six pillars: Building trust and legitimacy, policy and oversight, technology and social media, community policing and crime reduction, training and education, and officer wellness and safety. The county’s plan was launched in January and came out of a federal task force initiated by President Barack Obama.

“I am honored to represent the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office in Washington, D.C., this week and meet with White House staff and other law enforcement leaders who are working towards building their organizations around the principles of 21st-century policing,” Hart said Monday. “My staff and a number of community members have worked hard for the last six months on our 21st Century Policing implementation plan and we have put many great ideas into action.”

White House staff, the sheriff and other law enforcement leaders plan to discuss progress on the plan around the country and best practices in building trust among residents while emphasizing public safety.

A Sheriff’s Office Advisory Team of about 18 members has worked with 20 Santa Cruz County sheriff’s sergeants, deputies, detectives and administrators to examine 79 goals in 21st Century Policing during the past six months.

The team is expected to talk to the public about its recommendations to the Sheriff’s Office at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 at the Sheriff’s Office community room, 5200 Soquel Ave. in Live Oak.

A Sheriff’s Office website at 21stCenturyPolicing.us also includes updates to the program.
