A nonprofit called OpenBiome pays donors – who must pass a highly rigorous screening process – $40 to $50 each time they donate a stool sample. The donations are administered to very sick patients who are infected with a bacteria called C. difficile. When antibiotics don’t help the patients, the introduction of a healthy stool sample into the patient’s system – via endoscopy, nasal tubes or swallowed capsules – can abolish the infection.
