Researchers from NASA and MIT recently demonstrated the ability to transmit data by laser to a receiver mounted on a satellite orbiting the moon.

Four telescopes based in New Mexico, each 6 inches in diameter, are fed a laser transmission that beams coded data in pulses of light. These four telescopes are used to increase the chances of a connection to the receiver, some 238,900 miles away. The system can download data from the moon at a much faster speed – 622 Mbps.
