What is Project Sunroof?

Answer: Google’s shot in the arm for rooftop solar power

With the cost of solar panels at an all-time low, Google is researching the best conditions for rooftop solar to flourish. Google Maps’ database of aerial imagery, 3-D roof modeling, and would-be solar users will combine forces in a project Google is calling Project Sunroof

To lower the cost and thought barriers to entry on solar, Google aims to give would-be solar users the answers they need in a “treasure map of solar energy” that shows users how much solar power their roof could generate and how much they can save on their energy bill.

The project is initially available in Boston, the San Francisco Bay Area and Fresno, Calif.
