As part of a broader push to make Instagram safer for young users, the Facebook-owned social media platform is going to start requiring all users to enter their birthdate (if they haven’t done so already). After a few prompts that users will be able to ignore, the company will eventually lock people out of their account if they don’t provide their DOB.
Of course there will always be people who try to get around this by entering an incorrect birthdate, but Instagram says it has a plan to catch those miscreants. “We’re using artificial intelligence to estimate how old people are based on things like ‘Happy Birthday’ posts,” the company said in a statement.
