DHS Secretary: Cyber Is our Greatest Threat

When considering threats, think of cyber as being integrated with the physical.

I think most professionals — across the spectrum of responders, police, fire, emergency medical, utilities, emergency management, transportation, etc. — are comfortable with the known: bad weather, physical attacks, terrorism, etc. But we are not techies, so we think there is no role for us to play in cybersecurity.

Likely this is "stinking thinking" and we need to become prepared for an integrated response to all forms of disaster with one side of our brain paying attention to the cyber component. We have, after all, become much more digitally connected in many ways which is a force multiplier on a good day and a disrupter on a bad day — when things fail or are attacked.

I don't have the same information that the Secretary of Homeland Security has, but when she puts cybersecurity at the top of her priority list — we should pay attention, see Homeland Security Chief Cites Top Threat to U.S.

What actions can you point to that show your emphasis on the cyberthreat?
