Health Insurance Marketplace Data Breach Affects 1,100

Approximately 1,100 people may have been affected by a data breach that targeted Access Health CT. In the wake of the breach, Access Health CT reports they will take proactive steps to improve their security.

(TNS) — Access Health CT, which is Connecticut's health insurance marketplace, announced Tuesday the personal information of approximately 1,100 people might have been compromised in a data breach.

Those affected by the breach will receive an orange envelope in the mail this week, Access Health CT said. Recipients are instructed to review the information provided carefully, as they will need to take action to enroll in free services that are being offered to help protect their personal information.

After identifying the data breach, Access Health CT said it worked with third-party experts to assess the risk and help with “proactive steps” to mitigate the likelihood of such a breach happening again.

Access Health CT noted that several efforts to improve security already are in place, with longer-term initiatives planned regarding system changes and more frequent information technology security training to improve data protection and security awareness.

In addition to the mailing, Access Health CT will be contacting affected consumers via phone and email in an outreach effort to alert consumers to look for the orange envelopes in the mail and to help ensure that the mailing isn’t ignored.

Access Health CT CEO James Michel said the agency takes the privacy and security of consumers’ personal information “seriously,” and is making the public notice concerning the breach “in an abundance of caution.”

“We apologize for any inconvenience to consumers and we remain steadfast in our commitment to keep our consumers’ best interests as our No. 1 priority,” he said.

Consumers can call Access Health CT at 855-805-4325 if they have any questions.
