At the Los Angeles Digital Government Summit last month, Los Angeles County Probation Department CIO Benny Chacko was among the panelists offering advice for attendees who have their eye on landing a CIO job someday. His suggestion was to spend time honing skills outside of pure technology, like negotiation and presentation skills, for example.

As an agency-level CIO, knowledge of the agency's various business needs is just as important as a command of the latest technologies. At the Probation Department, Chacko's job requires knowledge of law enforcement, social services and health services. Here, Chacko talked to Government Technology about his agency's unique data challenges, and the potential he sees for data analytics to impact service delivery.
