Craig Fugate Talks about FEMA, Government and the Future

What Federal legislators found refreshing about Craig was his honesty.

See this recent interview with Craig Fugate, our dear departed FEMA administrator, FEMA’s Craig Fugate, On His Replacement And Hatred For Bureaucracy.

In typical blunt style, Craig answers the questions directly. Much of this article is about things I've heard Craig express previously. One of the things I concur with is the concept of, "If you are going to be shot, be shot for having done something, not for having sat and waited." I particularly like his penchant for action. You cannot make up for time lost in responding to a disaster. There is no catching up, once you have finally chosen to act. Getting ahead of the curve is your best bet for having an effective response. Much of the above proclivity for action means you need to be willing to take risks and not be afraid of making a mistake.

For now, it appears that he will not get his wish to have Nim Kidd, Texas, be his successor. See my blog post from last week on a name that has been floated as being the heir apparent to Fugate. The name came up again today in a separate conversation, so maybe, just maybe, the Department of Homeland Security has found its person. You know, there has never been a woman who served as the "permanent" appointee as FEMA director or administrator.

Claire Rubin shared the interview link above.
